One of the contradictions of making mineral supplements is to be found in the usage of chemicals rather than the use of natural products. There is a great demand for these supplements though as many more are now taking them. The debate however, is ongoing as people wonder whether putting chemicals into one’s body is good or bad. Resveratrol is a naturally produced plant extract, which is available from only a certain number of plants – specifically when they are under attack from pathogens.
The fact of the matter is that these chemical supplements are not as easy for our body to digest as natural ones. The industry is constantly striving to create products that are more easily processed by the body and therefore more beneficial. Industry constantly innovates and produces new ‘more bio-available’ forms of minerals and vitamins. To overcome this, a large number of mineral vitamins have been developed that combine other elements to enable them to be more easily absorbed by the body. One of the supplements iron, is converted to form iron gluconate to make it easy for the body to absorb the iron.
Within a mineral vitamin supplement, the amount of nutrients that are found need to be much greater than what it would be if it was in a more natural form so that the body is able to absorb the amount that is being required. This can obviously lead to problem where a toxic level of the particular nutrient is being consumed by the large doses that are needed. It is therefore extremely important that a person does not simply take vast quantities of all of the supplements that are advertised on television and should seek advice from a health professional. There is constant change in this industry and there are new supplements being brought into the market so often and one should take note of these.
Manufacturers have developed one method in order to help aid in the absorption through culturing all of the raw materials and this can be done with yeast cells. This type of supplements is called ‘food state’.
A lot of what we need as supplements has got to do with the kind of diet we follow. It goes without saying that nutrients obtained in their natural form through the food eaten is much better for the body than by artificial means. Long term use of supplements is not recommended.
